Rebekah Sepulveda, 24, is a graduate student and plans to earn her master’s degree in communication studies from The University of Texas-Pan American in December 2010. She graduated from UTPA in August 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies with a minor in history. While at UTPA, she has been actively involved in the Student Government Association, where she serves as a senator for graduate students. She also participates in the Advanced Leadership Academy, the University Program Board (UPB) as a programming assistant for Road Trip Roadies, and as a committee member for the Distinguished Speakers Series. Sepulveda has previously served as an intern in the Dean of Students Office for the Leadership Academy and as a work study in the Financial Aid Office. She currently works as an intern in the Office of Student Life and Transition Services for Camps and Conferences. As a graduate student, she has had the privilege to work as a teaching/research assistant in the Department of Communication where she participated in the Teaching and Learning Academy. In addition, she wrote a paper that was accepted to the Eastern Communication Association and had the opportunity to present it at a conference in Philadelphia last April. Sepulveda gives back to the community by volunteering with Make a Difference Day, Family Weekend and United to Serve.
After graduation, I plan to get my Ed.D. in student affairs. Hopefully I can stay close to home.
Of course, the Valley is home. After, all my education is done I would love to come home and work for UTPA.
The education I received at UTPA has allowed me to grow not only as a person but as a better leader. My education has given me the opportunity to travel to various conferences and learn more about higher education. But most importantly, my education has given me the opportunity to succeed in life.
It’s been wonderful; I’ve had the best time here. I’ve had the chance to participate in some wonderful programs and meet extraordinary people, who have taught me so much.
Albert Schweitzer once said, “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” Find out what you love to do and follow that path; life is full of choices but if you’re not happy, you’re not enjoying life.
The best advice I can offer a college-bound student is to get involved with your university community. School just isn’t about the classroom; join an organization or a club. College life is something completely different than anything else you have experienced. If you join an organization or club you’ll make great friends, who are willing to help you with anything.
