Mayra Leticia Reyes, 20, is a senior at The University of Texas-Pan American and will graduate in May 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in social work. She graduated in 2006 under the Distinguished Achievement Program from Valley View High School in Hidalgo, where she participated in the National Honor Society and served on the chair committee of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. She also completed 900 volunteer hours with the AmeriCorps Youth Harvest Program in which she served her community with different service projects. While at UTPA, she has served as a member of the Social Work Student Association, Phi Alpha Mu Social Work Honor Society and G-Force Organization. She is currently the secretary for the Phi Alpha Mu Social Work Honor Society. Reyes is a Certified Peer Educator with Bacchus & Gammas and with that training she has been able to mentor incoming students. She has also worked as a tour guide at the Visitors Center and for Admissions and New Student Services and served as a collegiate mentor at the UTPA Go Center and UTPA Mother Daughter Program. Her service activities also include volunteering at HESTEC and FESTIBA.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to start the master’s program in social work here at UTPA and concentrate in community practice and administration.

Do you plan to stay in the Valley?

I plan to stay in the Valley and give back as much as I can to my community.

What has your education done for you?

It has empowered me and motivated me to continue working on my goals.

How do you feel about your UTPA experience?

I love my experience at UTPA because I have met nice professional staff and faculty who have helped me throughout my education. Based on my experience I always promote UTPA and the great education offered.

What is your best tip for success?

Never hide your leadership skills because being a leader will always open the doors to great opportunities.

What advice do you have for college-bound students?

Always take advantage of all the free resources and never say “NO” to education.
