Analucia Perdomo, 22, a senior at The University of Texas-Pan American, plans to graduate in May 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies focusing in anthropology, English and music. While at UTPA, Perdomo spent two years as a UTPA Ambassador mentoring freshmen and assisting at various on-campus events. She recently graduated from UTPA’s Student Leadership Academy. Homeschooled until college, she currently maintains a GPA of 3.9. Perdomo also serves as a volunteer for many different on and off campus activities. Some of her volunteer work includes singing in the Valley Symphony Choral, directing choir at church, assisting the director for an annual youth and young adult service retreat, acting as a senior counselor/choir director for church summer camp and demonstrating historical fiber art skills at various museums such as The Museum of South Texas History, schools and cultural events.
After receiving my bachelor’s degree, I plan to attend graduate school in New York. After graduating with my master’s, I want to direct choir and also work in some area which involves human aid and service to the Spanish-speaking community in the United States and Central and South America.
I am unsure where I will locate after graduate school.
Higher education allowed and helped me grow into adulthood. A university education gives me means to expand and test my abilities while opening doors for future vocational opportunities.
Attending UTPA has been wonderful. There are so many fantastic professors and students at UTPA. In some departments, such as music, everyone spends so much time together in and out of class that it feels like a family. Additionally, it has been really good living at home while attending college. The support from my family during my college years has been invaluable.
Set your goals high and work hard for success. One can’t achieve anything higher than one’s goals. Don’t be afraid to soar to the heights. “Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” -Marianne Williamson
Work hard. Study a subject you love. Learn from your mistakes - we all make them. Try new things. Meet new people. Don’t be afraid of change. One can have lots of fun in college, but don’t party away your dreams. Set yourself up for success by considering your personality, interests, abilities and goals. Then, pursue college in a way that best suits you so you can achieve and accomplish wonderful things.
