Katherine Mendiola, 19, a senior at The University of Texas-Pan American, plans to graduate in spring 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and English with a minor in philosophy. She entered UTPA as a University Scholar in spring 2007. Mendiola has remained active within the University by participating in several student organizations. She is the president of the Pre-Law Society, historian of the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society, reporter of the Political Science Association, and senator for the College of Arts and Humanities. She is an active member of the Leadership Academy, Golden Key Society, and Philosophy Club. She is in the Guerra Honors Program, currently working on her honors thesis. In the summer of 2008 Mendiola participated in the Law School Preparation Institute, which is a rigorous five-week program that simulates a law school experience. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is currently employed with the Office of Career Services, which helps to promote student employment.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I plan on going to law school at The University of Texas at Austin. Once I graduate from law school I hope to start my own law firm in the Valley.

Do you plan to return to the Valley?

Since my roots and ties are here in the Valley I intend to return and make a contribution to this area. I believe the Valley is a cultural melting pot and is constantly growing. Because of this constant growth it is a great place to live and can allow my career as an attorney to flourish.

What has your education done for you?

My education has empowered me to see different facets of the University community. It allowed me to participate and contribute to different campus organizations which enabled me to see our democratic system at work.

How do you feel about your UTPA experience?

I love it. It has been very beneficial. I have learned a lot and the professors are more than willing to help a student. I have become a part of something bigger than just a student in a class room. UTPA has many opportunities to help students gain a great university experience.

What is your best tip for success?

To realize that education, along with determination and perseverance, opens many doors to different opportunities. Always keep in mind your passion.

What advice do you have for college-bound students?

Become active in organizations early in your college career. Becoming involved will expose you to many opportunities for success.
