Erika Alanis, 21, a senior at The University of Texas-Pan American, plans to graduate with a double major in psychology and sociology in May 2009. She is a transfer student from South Texas College where she graduated in May 2007 with an associate’s degree in general studies. While pursuing her associate degree she was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society where she served as an active member of the Beta Lambda Gamma Chapter. At UTPA, she is an active member of the Rotaract Club, currently serving as secretary. She is also an inductee of the National Honor Society in Psychology and of the Golden Key International Honour Society. She is employed at the UTPA Office of Career Services as a student career adviser and at the Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex as a Zumba instructor. She has been involved in community service through the Rotaract Club where she has participated in projects such as Keep McAllen Beautiful and Habitat for Humanity.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I plan to continue my education. I want to pursue a Master of Science in social work here at UTPA. I found this program to be very complete and it is just what I am looking for.

Do you plan to stay in the Valley?

I would love to stay in the Valley. I am not a native of the Valley but I have found it to be a very safe and quiet place to live in. After I get my master’s I hope I can find a job I like in the area to be able to stay here.

What has your education done for you?

It has helped me to understand others better. It has opened my mind to new perspectives and new ways of analyzing different situations. I have learned to think critically regarding the many social issues we are facing nowadays.

How do you feel about your UTPA experience?

UTPA really has made an impact on my life. I have encountered persons that have helped me in the process of getting my education. The opportunities that we have to develop not only in a mental way but also in a physical and spiritual way have helped me a lot in this stage of my life.

What is your best tip for success?

Dream big knowing always what you want from life. When you set up goals that you really want to achieve, you find yourself fighting for that as you have not ever imagined before. Knowing what you want helps you determine your future while enjoying your present.

What advice do you have for college-bound students?

Take advantage of all the opportunities offered to you while in high school. Always ask your advisers about what is the best path you can take. Get involved in your school and your community, be proactive.
