Hiram Romero, 20, a sophomore at The University of Texas-Pan American, plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in international business and a minor in leadership and business management in 2009. Romero graduated under the Distinguished Achievement Plan from San Benito High School in 2005. He was actively involved in organizations such as the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, and Business Professionals of America. While attending UTPA, Romero has been active within the community and school. He took office as the secretary of the SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) organization in his freshman year. He is also a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, Student Leadership Program, International Business Association, and a brother of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Outside school, he has been involved in community service projects like the Comfort House Walkathon, American Diabetes Association-Kappa Sigma Bike to the Coast, South Padre Island Beach Cleanup, HESTEC, and the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduating, I plan to attend The University of Texas at Austin to obtain a master’s in business administration. Afterwards, I would like to work for an international company concentrating on imports and exports and someday, hopefully, have my own business.

Do you plan to stay in the Valley?

Even though the Rio Grande Valley provides many opportunities, I feel that in my future line of work there will be a greater chance to work with internationally-based companies on the West Coast. This is not to say that I will never return to the Valley, but as I continue my learning experience outside of this geographic area, I hope to grow in both my education and professional career.

What has your education done for you?

My education has taught me discipline, responsibility, how to do critical thinking, as well as how to network within the school and community.

How do you feel about your UTPA experience?

My UTPA experience has allowed me to implement the skills learned in the classroom setting to real-world situations. Also, all the student organizations that I am involved with have provided me with the opportunity to enhance my leadership skills and to expand my network by working with people from different backgrounds to accomplish a common goal.

What is your best tip for success?

The best advice I could give someone to succeed is to always be perseverant. Never give up if you really want to accomplish something and if things get difficult just think about the benefits and rewards you will receive and work harder.

What advice do you have for college-bound students?

My advice for them is to keep in mind that there will not be bells anymore to let them know that it is time for class. They must be responsible for their actions because they will have an effect on their future at some point in life. I would also advise them to get involved with the school and community by joining organizations of their interest in order to meet new people and extend their network.
