The Operation Wellness: Get Fit and Stay Fit Challenge sponsored by the Provost’s Initiative on Campus Wellness and the Border Health Office at The University of Texas-Pan American ended with an awards ceremony for the winners Dec. 6 in the University Ballroom.

Operation Wellness, a 13-week departmental challenge that started Sept. 11, was initiated by Health Education Coordinator Denny Meline with a goal of promoting healthier lifestyles by UTPA staff and faculty members. Participants were required to log exercise minutes and the amount of water consumed as well as attend a monthly lecture. Each month, each person’s weight, height, blood pressure, body mass index, and body fat percentage were assessed and recorded by the Border Health Office staff.

Luncheon attendees were welcomed by Doreen D. Garza, M.P.H., executive director, Border Health Office and also heard from guest speaker Marc Dopher, News Channel 5 sports anchor/reporter. Both team and individual awards were presented.

Departments competing in the challenge were Talent Search/Mother Daughter Program, Computer Center, Border Health Office, New Student and Administrative Services (three teams), Counseling and Psychological Services, Texas AVID State Office, Record Keeping at Haggar, Title V, College of Education and the University Library (two teams).

Male individual winners were as follows: first place, Mark Ramos, New Student and Administrative Services; second, Jeff Huerta, Texas AVID State Office; and third, Rick Riojas, Computer Center. Female individual winners were first, Elena Lopez, Library; second, Veronica Cano, Counseling and Psychological Services; and third, Cathy Garza, Library. Individual prizes included a portable DVD player for first place; a MP3 player for second; and a heart rate monitor for third.

The Grand Championship team award ended in a tie between Counseling and Psychological Services (Team Der Leanerschnitzel) and the Library (Team Book and Body Smarts), which will share an engraved trophy. Team Der Leanerschnitzel was also presented the "Brainiacs Award" for the smartest team and the "Lite Weights Award" for the greatest weight loss. The Texas AVID State Office (Team L. Avidus) won the "Fitness Elites Award" for the top results in the amount of exercise and water consumed. These departmental winners received a banner to display their success in their office.

"We would like to congratulate faculty and staff who participated in the challenge. It was a great success with 13 teams and more than 80 employees completing the grueling 13 weeks of dieting, exercising and healthy lecture seminars to improve their quality of life," said the Border Health Office Wellness Team.

Details on the next challenge are pending but for those wanting more information on the Provost’s Initiative or leading a healthier lifestyle, contact Meline in the Border Health Office at 956/318-8900.
