Dr. Kimberly Selber
Dr. Kimberly A. Selber, assistant professor in communication, has been awarded a prestigious Lone Star Award for a feature photo. Selber's second place photo was one of only three photos statewide receiving this award, the other two awards went to photographers at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.





The Department of Rehabilitation in the College of Health Sciences and Human Services was well represented at the recent Seventh Annual National Rehabilitation Educators Conference in San Diego Feb. 22-25, 2007. A total of seven faculty members attended with the following peer reviewed topics presented:

“Phototherapy and Chemical Dependency Treatment” by Dr. Noreen Glover, associate professor and Dr. Eva Miller, associate professor.

“Odyssey of International Students to the American Professoriate in Rehabilitation Education” and “Rehabilitation Services and Training in Four Asian Nations: South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand” by Dr. Roy Chen, assistant professor.

“Impact of Job Satisfaction on the Retention of State and Private Vocational Rehabilitation Personnel” by Dr. Charlene Blankenship, assistant professor.
The 110th Annual Meeting of the Texas Academy of Science was held at Baylor University in Waco, Texas March 1-3, 2007. The Texas Academy of Science is the oldest scientific organization in the state and one of the oldest scientific organizations in the United States.

At this meeting Dr. Robert J. Edwards, professor of biology, was awarded the 2007 Outstanding Service Award for his years as manuscript editor for the Academy’s journal, The Texas Journal of Science, and for his other contributions to the Academy.

Dr. Timothy Brush
Dr. Timothy Brush, professor of biology, was elected Fellow of the Academy for his contributions to ornithology at the meeting.

Dr. Hudson DeYoe, associate professor of biology, is the president of the Texas Academy of Science.

In addition, Natasha Pardo, a graduate student in biology, won a competitive $500 research grant to support her Master of Science thesis, and undergraduate student Antonio Villarreal won a $100 travel grant to attend the meeting and present his research findings.

Also, the following papers were presented at the Texas Academy of Science meeting by Department of Biology faculty and students:

“Pathogen inhibitory activity of indigenous Streptomyces from Lower Rio Grande Valley agricultural soils” by Atenea A. Garza, a student; Dr. Christopher R. Little, assistant professor; and Dr. Anita Davelos Baines, assistant professor.

“Resistance plasmids may confer heavy metal tolerance to bacteria inhabiting a rare hypersaline estuary” by Tiffany L. Rubinstein, Roshni P. Patel and Daren D. Molina, students; Dr. Michael W. Persans, assistant professor; and Dr. Kristine L. Lowe, assistant professor.

“Fish assemblages in an urban aquatic system with two contrasting water sources” by Edwards.

“Characterization of metal reducing bacterial populations from different subtropical and tropical aquatic ecosystems” by Omar R. Elizondo and Domingo Molina, students, and Lowe. Elizondo won second place in the graduate student division for his presentation.

“Water quality in the Bahia Grande following restoration of tidal flow” by students Reuben Trevino, Erin Bieberbach and Antonio Villarreal, all students, and DeYoe.

“Re-discovery of the tropical green macroalga, Penicillus capitatus Lamarck (Chlorophyta: Bryopsidales), in Lower Laguna Madre, Texas” by Joseph L. Kowalski, a former student; Donald L. Hockaday, research and education coordinator, Coastal Studies Laboratory; Gilbert H. Boza Jr., research assistant, Coastal Studies Laboratory; and DeYoe.

“Seasonal variation in dune vegetation on South Padre Island, Texas” by Dr. Frank W. Judd, research professor; Dr. Robert I. Lonard, research professor; Dr. K. Rod Summy, associate professor; and Dr. Ruben Mazariegos, associate professor, Department of Physics and Geology.

The following posters were presented at the Texas Academy of Science meeting by Department of Biology faculty and students:

“Transcriptional regulation of an E2F associated apoptotic pathway” by Analyssa C. Medina, student; and Dr. Jonathan H. Lieman, assistant professor.

“Phosphatase regulation of E2F associated apoptosis” by Joe M. Garza, student, and Lieman.

“Grazing efficiencies of three marine snails, Littorina irrorata, Anachis avara, Bulla striata, from the Lower Laguna Madre, Texas” by Antonio Villarreal, student, and DeYoe.

“A guide to identification of weeds in South Texas and northern Mexico” by
James H. Everitt, U.S. Department of Agriculture; Lonard and Little.
